Our Version of Winter Olympics: Team Strengthening Paired With Healthy Competition

Earlier this year, the FC-CIS Communities In Schools team gathered for a Winter Summit focused on strengthening the work happening every day in our schools. Inspired by the Winter Olympics, the day blended professional learning with team-based activities, creating an environment where Site Coordinators could share ideas, learn from one another, and celebrate the creative ways they support students.

Throughout the Summit, Site Coordinators participated in interactive learning activities designed to reinforce collaboration and strengthen their skills. Staff were divided into two teams—USA and Norway—and competed for points across the day. From trivia to a scavenger hunt, the activities were designed to reinforce knowledge and tools that support students and families every day. Teams navigated national databases, tested their knowledge of key processes, and explored resources used in all of their schools. Points were earned through these activities as well as participation in other learning exercises throughout the day, keeping the energy high while deepening the knowledge that helps Site Coordinators better serve students.

In addition to fun learning and competitions, each Site Coordinator presented a strategy, tool, or approach they’ve implemented effectively in their school. Through these short presentations, Site Coordinators showcased real  practices they use to support students and families. In one presentation, a group comprised of an elementary, middle and high school Site Coordinator, shared three distinct technology tools they use to communicate with students and keep families engaged, highlighting how to adapt according to grade level.

Professional learning opportunities like the CIS Winter Summit directly strengthen the support we are able to provide students and families. When Site Coordinators have the chance to share successful strategies, exchange ideas, and build stronger connections with one another, they return to their schools with new tools and renewed energy for their work—helping us surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.
