Join Family Connection–Communities in Schools and Envision Athens for an informative community session unveiling a new tool designed to help individuals and organizations respond thoughtfully and effectively to neighbors experiencing homelessness.
Responding to Homelessness: A Navigation Tree introduces a strategic, community-informed approach to navigating real-life situations that many residents, service providers, and organizations encounter. This resource provides accurate, practical guidance for responding to a range of circumstances with clarity and compassion.
The Navigation Tree outlines recommended responses for common situations, including:
Basic Concerns – Requests for food, money, or basic resources, or situations involving someone who may be newly unhoused or unfamiliar with available services
Physical Health Concerns – Situations where someone may need medical attention or health-related support
Mental Health Concerns – Encounters involving possible mental health needs or crises
Threats of Violence or Safety Concerns – Situations where safety may be at risk, and an immediate response is needed
During this session, attendees will hear from a panel of local experts who will offer insights, answer questions, and engage in discussion on effective ways to respond in these scenarios.
Participants will also receive a copy of the Navigation Tree, providing a practical guide to help navigate future encounters and connect individuals with appropriate resources.
